It is not easy to maintain the warehousing and logistics service in the food and beverage industry, and there are several issues that need to be overcome while delivering safe food.
FREMONT, CA: The modern storage and distribution companies need to realize the role that they play in food safety. The logistics industry's significant companies also know the rules and regulations adopted by BRCGS Global Standard for Storage and Distribution. They must follow these standards dedicatedly to assure the consumers of their food and beverage that they know the practice they are following.
It will also ensure that the customers have proper facility management, better-operating systems, and hazard and risk analysis. Presently the storage and distribution companies mainly operating in the cold chain are searching for a method to establish their knowledge of food safety standards to the consumers.
[vendor_logo_first]One of the commonly applied food safety management systems is ISO 22000. This system can be used by every food company irrespective of the size. It offers a better insight into the food safety risks that come from farms or fork, which even includes the storage and distribution industry.
The food safety management systems focus on promoting better hygiene to prevent situations where food products pose a threat to animals or humans. Therefore, the companies related to distribution, transport of food, or storage have to prioritize these few issues.
Temperature management
It can be a challenge for the food carriers to transport refrigerated, hot, or frozen food. In most cases, the temperatures are not clearly defined, and due to this, the ATP agreements (Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs) monitor the situation.
The agreement has been modified several times. It has to monitor the type of food that can be transported and the distance it will travel. It has also made rules about the equipment that can be utilized for transporting perishable food across the borders. Moreover, these equipment are also inspected at regular intervals.
Food defense
It is necessary to protect the security of the food supply chain from international attacks. The supply chain can be attacked by bioterrorists, vandals, or any other harmful substances.
Therefore, the food protection systems are required to protect the reputation of the companies involved in preserving the food that has been attacked and the health of the consumers.
Food fraud
The food storage and distribution companies also have the responsibility of preventing tampering of food ingredients or packaging for economic gain. The companies' goal must be to prevent the product from being exposed to the contamination in the first place.
Various supply chain management tools like SCREEN (Supply Chain Risk Exposure Network) allow the companies to horizon scan and the local and global risks. In the food industry, the companies also utilize the Vulnerability Assessment and Critical Control Points for managing such types of hazards.
