The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved the SafeTraces patent for DNA-based barcode to improve food traceability. The patent provides a unique method for decoding and encoding digital data to and from DNA Strands. SafeTraces has used DNA strands extracted from seaweed in allowing the food and agricultural industry to apply unique, edible, bland DNA barcodes on the food itself rather than the packaging. These barcodes provide information regarding the food product from its origin, handling, and transference through the supply chain.
The testing of the novel technology resulted in a unique, scalable, and highly cost-effective method of identifying food with several advantages, making it superior to traditional DNA tagging. SafeTraces can generate and deliver approximately four billion DNA barcodes at the cost of just 32 DNA barcodes when conventional technology is used. It is marketed as safeTracers, and can be deciphered anywhere and at any time by a modestly-trained employee, unlike the present DNA tagging methods.
The new model proposed by the company is unique and inseparable from the food product. It serves as the connecting link between the food supply chain and blockchain system and has been developed for low-profit industries. SafeTraces’ expert team of scientists, entrepreneurs, and engineers have developed quality products that gain user trust even in an era where their sustainability and authenticity are regularly called into question.
safeTracers are confirmed G.R.A.S. (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the FDA and have obtained a patent, which describes the development in digital food safety technologies and commitment towards the next generation of food traceability. The solutions offered by the company also include bar-coding systems and DNA Barcode readers running on low-cost equipment, which can be seamlessly retrofitted in the facility unlocking a new era of economic food safety technologies with guaranteed assurance.
