A global collaborative effort is required to achieve the future of healthy and sustainable food.
FREMONT, CA: Food sustainability is the ability to improve living standards without damaging the natural resources of present and future generations. Human survival depends on the environment, and practising sustainable food habits will preserve the ecosystem for the years to come.
The transition to a sustainable food system to feed an estimated 10 billion people by 2050 is an exceptional challenge. This transformation is made possible through a scientific approach to food sustainability, including an amalgamation of factors such as food production methods, distribution, consumption, and waste management.
Agricultural practices must focus on producing more diverse and nutritious crops to reduce land degradation and loss of carbon and biomass. Food cultivation technology is turning toxic for our health and environment by implementing chemicals for better yield.
Food production accounts for over 30 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, occupies 40 per cent of global land and consumes 70 per cent of fresh water. It's the most significant factor causing species extinction and creating a dead zone in water bodies. The gradual rise in human mortality, morbidity, and food insecurity increases the risk of irreversible and calamitous changes in the global system.
How to achieve food sustainability?
Recent research on food and eating habit emphasizes consuming healthy diets comprising vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and unsaturated oils. Inducing organic and eliminating processed food from diet plans will improve overall health.
The governing authority at the local and global levels should implement strict laws for the conservation of land and water bodies. The food packaging process must abolish the use of plastic and non-biodegradable products.
Agricultural companies must adapt innovative technology to yield a high volume of nutritious crops. Food wastage can be controlled by leveraging a combination of technical solutions and public awareness. Educating the farmers with cutting-edge farming techniques will accommodate regenerative farming. It helps to increase soil fertility, control weed and pest, reduce flooding and droughts, and build a broader ecosystem.
Incorporating healthy eating habits into our daily life will ensure a sustainable and diverse ecosystem.
