Creating an efficient cold supply chain is one thing. Making sure it stays up and running 24/7 is quite another. Businesses face many challenges, including labor shortages, rising energy prices, and a lack of suitable land to build warehouses at the right locations. This is where, NewCold, with its compelling cold storage solutions and sustainable energy efficient warehouses, is helping food businesses stay ahead of the curve.

As a leader in automated cold storage solutions and food safety, NewCold offers its large-scale, high-tech facilities that are less reliant on scarce resources such as labor, land, and power for leading food corporations in locations they need in their supply chain. With the help of its cutting-edge technology, automation, and robotization, the company specializes in temperature-controlled cold storage warehousing, end-to-end supply chain solutions, including transportation services. It uses top-of-the-line equipment to automatically transport the food products in and out of the facilities without individuals touching the goods and compromising the safety. NewCold’s proprietary warehouse management system CORAX is directing all flows in the warehouse with optimal speed, efficiency, and reliability, while tracking and tracing inventories in real-time comprehensively.

“Our solutions provide a huge opportunity to always safeguard and support food security while also enabling supply chain agility, which is important in today’s culture and environment,” says Jonas Swarttouw, VP of Customer & Business Development.

From door to door, all of NewCold’s sites are maintained at the required temperatures to keep up with the cold chain consistency. Not only is the temperature optimum for the product in the warehouse where the pallets are housed, but it is also appropriate in all other areas of the facility. A pallet is handled at the right temperature from the time it reaches the warehouse until it is loaded to be shipped to a customer. In case if a product is damaged, the doors inside the controlled environment are unlocked, and the products are removed from the trailer immediately. As products are never stored in a chilled or ambient setting as opposed to many conventional cold storage facilities, there are no cold chain breaches taking place at NewCold’s sites.

Generally, in a conventional cold storage, the pallets are moved around with forklifts, and every time there is a turn, there is a chance of damage. With NewCold, the journey from the truck to the infeed point is 24 feet on a forklift, and there is no turning—a worker can remove the product from the truck, turn the forklift around, and place it on the ground. Thereon, the pallet is moved throughout the warehouse and into storage racks via conveyors that are very consistent and travel at a controlled speed.

  • Our solutions provide a huge opportunity to always safeguard and support food security while also enabling supply chain agility, which is important in today’s culture and environment,” says Jonas Swarttouw, VP of Customer & Business Development.

Showcasing the uniqueness and scope of what NewCold offers is a client success story, shared by Mike Shawgo (VP Operations). One of its customers could not find a reliable cold storage facility, which could support their operation and hence operated eight warehouses in a relatively narrow geographic area. And as one could imagine, with those many warehouses, they were dealing with multiple computer systems, several order processing challenges, redundant inventory, and too many stock transfer shipments between the facilities. NewCold offered a unique solution to the client that aggregated all eight of those facilities into a single shipping site. The solution significantly lowered the carrying expenses, improved inventory control and food safety by reducing touches and state of the art technology.

In addition to its unparalleled commitment to food safety, NewCold places equal emphasis on helping its customers become successful in their supply chains worldwide. The company is investing extensively in QESH (quality, environment, safety, and health) for enhanced customer satisfaction and the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness. “We combine passionate individuals who are devoted to their work with the most advanced technology and automation to guarantee food safety in a reliable manner,” affirms Swarttouw.

NewCold expands automated cold storage warehouse in Indiana

The Dutch cold chain logistics company NewCold opened a $300 million facility in Indiana that it calls one of the largest and most advanced cold storage facilities in the world.
The “highly automated” warehouse is capable of running 24/7, thanks in part to using power generated from a variety of sources so it can be grid-independent and operate about 50% more energy-efficiently than traditional warehouses, the company said.
Phase one of the Lebanon, Indiana-based building has been operational for almost a year with a capacity of 100,700 industrial pallet positions. Construction of phase two is now underway and will see its capacity double to over 200,000 industrial pallet positions when becomes operational in Summer 2024.
According to the company, the project has proceeded despite challenges ranging from pandemic lockdowns and port congestion to transport and labor shortages. “The day after we decided to develop this facility the United States was shut down due to COVID. That we are here today is a testament to the significant contribution and collaboration of many partners and stakeholders in the Indiana state government, Boone County, and the City of Lebanon,” Jonas Swarttouw, executive vice president, and chairman of NewCold in North America, said in a release.
NewCold says it operates a total of 15 automated and energy-efficient warehouses on three continents with over 1.2 million pallet positions.

NewCold doubles down on expansion in the Netherlands

Breda NewCold, the fast-growing leader in advanced food logistics, is expanding in its home country.
A new highly automated warehouse is already under construction in Dinteloord, North Brabant, and NewCold has recently acquired the Koel-en Vrieshuis Reimerswaal (KVR) facility in Kruiningen, Zeeland.
NewCold’s leading position globally, and reputation for innovation, convinced the former owner Mark Baas that it was the right decision to entrust NewCold with the business his family had built over decades.
Bram Hage, NewCold CEO and Founder, added: “Due to customer demand, NewCold is expanding its footprint in the Netherlands. Alongside the greenfield project at Dinteloord, where we are building a state-of-the-art facility, we see great value in KVR’s strategic location. We also see a good opportunity to unlock additional capabilities through refurbishment and deploying NewCold’s proprietary software and automated solutions in the warehouse. We will also expand the facility’s pallet position capacity.”
Since its formation in 2012, NewCold has grown from having warehouses in Germany and France to 15 in several countries on three continents, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
NewCold is also growing in existing markets, such as the United States, where a fourth facility in that country is nearing completion. And NewCold is moving into new markets, with expansion to India and Canada already announced.
“NewCold has earned its reputation for innovation. We are growing because we deliver high-level service consistently, using automation and proprietary software to cut loading times, costs, and carbon footprints,” noted Hage.

New benchmark for food logistics at the Crossroads of America

• The $300 million facility is among the largest in the world.
• Patented technology boosts US food supply chain resilience.
• Indiana is seen as an increasingly strategic food logistics hub.
• Investment brings economic uplift, innovation, and employment for skilled Hoosiers.
LEBANON - Fast-growing NewCold officially opened one of the largest and most advanced cold storage facilities in the world in Lebanon, IN, today - underlining the importance of the state as a food logistics hub.
NewCold’s new state-of-the-art warehouse in Lebanon is highly automated. On-site proprietary technology includes four new patents. “We believe this facility sets a new benchmark for our industry,” said Bram Hage, NewCold Founder and CEO. “NewCold is at the forefront of innovation in the market. We are building a more resilient, reliable, and sustainable food supply chain to better serve our customers. This allows us to support their growth and strategic objectives - to better serve their customers.”
Capable of running 24/7, NewCold aims to make its warehouses increasingly grid-independent, using their own power generated from a variety of sources, including renewables. NewCold’s warehouses are about 50% more energy efficient than traditional warehouses.
Phase one of Lebanon has been operational for almost a year with a capacity of 100,700 industrial pallet positions, construction of phase two at NewCold Lebanon is underway and will see its capacity double to over 200,000 industrial pallet positions. This represents a doubling of the initial investment, bringing the capital investment in the facility to over $300 million.
The Lebanon facility serves some of the largest food producers in the world. The efficiency of the operation and strategic location means there’s potential for further expansion, bringing even more economic uplift to the area.
Remarkably, this achievement was realized during one of the most challenging business environments in decades. “The day after we decided to develop this facility the United States was shut down due to COVID. That we are here today is a testament to the significant contribution and collaboration of many partners and stakeholders in the Indiana state government, Boone County, and the City of Lebanon,” noted Jonas Swarttouw, Executive Vice President, and Chairman of NewCold in North America.
Overcoming numerous challenges - from lockdowns and port congestion, to transport and labor shortages – took concerted effort from all stakeholders.
However, the pandemic brought an increased focus on supply chain resilience and reinforced the reasons to locate a highly automated NewCold facility in Indiana.
“None of our warehouses shut down during COVID. That period underlined the importance of building resilience into the supply chain of leading food companies in the US,” notes Swarttouw. “And that’s aside from the positive economic impact, including over 250 high-quality employment opportunities, the Lebanon facility has created.”
“We are invested in working with companies like NewCold who prove to be innovators in the food logistics industry. The Boone EDC works diligently to create a desirable county for businesses like NewCold to build and expand. We look forward to their continued positive impact on our community and to Boone County,” Molly Whitehead, Boone EDC executive director.
"Lebanon is thrilled to be celebrating the grand opening of NewCold. With their highly automated storage systems, NewCold is on the cutting edge of our food supply chain and Lebanon is proud to be their home. NewCold's investment further solidifies Lebanon as an important food manufacturing and supply hub in the United States," said Mayor Matthew Gentry.
The scale and strategic location of the facility, at the crossroads of America, means it acts as a transport center of gravity for food companies. Further enhancing Indiana’s status as a major food logistics hub.
“Indiana is laser-focused on cultivating a global economy of the future here in partnership with leading companies like NewCold,” said Tony Denhart, EVP of workforce and talent at the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “Located strategically in the center of the Midwest, Indiana is uniquely positioned to be a leader in advanced logistics and agbioscience. NewCold’s new facility will help support the global food supply chain, providing critical goods to consumers, while creating quality, high-tech jobs in Lebanon and advancing economic growth in the surrounding community.”
